COLLEGE STATION, Texas - The Texas A&M University System awarded $507,000 to outstanding faculty throughout the system in the second presentation of the Teaching Excellence Awards, a voluntary, student-selected honors program launched last fall.       The  faculty winners will receive checks ranging from $2,500 to $10,000. Hooks Man Killed

An argument ended in the death of Anthony “Tony” Howard Hight, 42, of Hooks. Scott Michael Adams, 37, of Texarkana was considered the suspect. The argument started after 1:00 Wednesday afternoon in Miller County on CR-61. Adams is now facing first-degree murder in the case.

Sulphur Springs Man Tasered

Sulphur Springs police were forced to taser a man after he was reported for soliciting without a permit. The man had been told to get in the squad car several times, but refused. After the tasering, he was taken to jail without further incident.

Wolfe City Man Killed In Wreck

A Hunt County man was killed Wednesday afternoon in a one vehicle wreck on a country road just off Hwy 34 near Wolfe City. State Troopers say 73 year old Haskell Leo Harris of Wolfe City ran off the road and struck a concrete bridge. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Attorney Appointed For Stabbing Suspect

17 year old Corey Dominic Heath of Commerce has had an attorney appointed to represent him on charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. He has reportedly confessed to slashing the throat of another teen after an argument over a shirt. The wound required over a thousand stitches to close. Heath is seeking a reduction in his $35,000 bond.

Hearing Scheduled For Morris County Murder

A hearing is scheduled in Morris County for Tuesday to determine when Lester Jackson's murder trial will begin. Jackson, of Pittsburg, is accused of shooting to death 21 year old Texas A&M-Commerce student Christopher Moore at Katdaddy’s Club near Daingerfield over the Easter weekend. DA Steven Cowan anticipates the case will begin in late July.

NE Texas TEA Parties

TEA parties are scheduled around the country this holiday weekend to protest what organizers call “irresponsible government spending”. T-E-A stands for “Taxed enough already”. Sulphur Springs TEA party will be held tomorrow night at 6:30 in front of the Hopkins County Courthouse, and will feature Governor Rick Perry and Congressman Ralph Hall as the keynote speakers. Mt Pleasant and Paris will hold their TEA parties on Saturday at noon, at their courthouses.

New Administrators At TAMU-C

Dr. Christine Evans has begun her duties as the new dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at Texas A&M –Commerce. Two other new administrators will assume their duties on July 13th. Dr. Larry Lemanski will serve as Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs and Randy Van Deven will be the new Vice President for Institutional Development.

Fannin County Man Run Over

An Ivanhoe man was struck by a vehicle and killed on FM 898 just west of Hwy 121 in Bonham. A concerned citizen had called worried about the man walking in the roadway. A few minutes later, another call came in by another citizen claiming they had just hit him. The victim was identified as 28 year old Randy Keene

Appeals Court Upholds Convictions, Death Sentences

The Texas Court of Criminal Appeals has upheld the conviction and death sentence of the North Texas man who sexually assaulted and murdered an 11-year old girl. Steven Long killed Kaitlyn Smith in a south Dallas trailer park in May of 2005. The Court also upheld the death sentence for Gregory Lynn Russeau, who was convicted of capital murder for killing a 75-year-old Tyler man in 2001.

Assault Victim of Gilmer Suspect Missing

A Gilmer man accused of sexually assaulting a woman in Missouri twice in four days is an illegal immigrant, and police say they can't locate the woman. 34 year old Florencio Sarmiento remained in Missouri on $100,000 bond. Texas authorities said Sarmiento, who had no driver's license and spoke little English, is not a U.S. citizen.

Cell Phone Photographer Sentenced

51 year old James Keith Hayes of Greenville has been sentenced 90 days in jail and 5 years probation for improper photo or visual recording. Court records show a woman and her daughter were inside the Greenville Wal-Mart and observed Hayes using his cell phone to take photos of the child.

Rodeo Clown Charged With Rustling

A 4-time world champion rodeo clown has been sentenced to five years probation and ordered to pay $15,000 in restitution for helping steal 300 head of cattle. The Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association investigated the case against 36 year old Michael Eugene Matt of Blanco.

Water Safety Urged Over Holiday Weekend

Child advocates are urging parents to pay special attention to their kids this holiday weekend while they are around water. Since January, 60 children have drowned in Texas, with 30 of those drownings happening in June. Experts say the majority of drownings happen while a child is with parents or other adults.

$6.2 Million For Bowie County

Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack announced the selection of Central Bowie County Water Corporation would receive federal funds provided through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. The project will be conducted in a two-phase process to eliminate existing deficiencies and provide capacity for future growth. WASHINGTON - The U.S. Department of Labor has announced a second and final increment of a National Emergency Grant, in the amount of $7,933,200, to assist in the continued clean-up and recovery efforts in Texas following Hurricane Ike. Texas drivers are urged to drive safely during the July 4 holiday weekend. Second Person Dies After Hopkins County Domestic Disturbance

47 year old Kimberly Mclarry of Wood County was shot and killed by State Troopers this (Friday) morning after she allegedly shot her ex husband , 55 year old Robert Allen McLarry after a disturbance at a location on Hwy 154 south of Sulphur Springs. It apparently happened at an automotive repair shop known as "Mike's Garage". McLarry was flown to ETMC in Tyler where he later diedl. Texas Rangers, and Hopkins and Wood County deputes are investigating.

Settlement Ordered In Discrimination Suit

A federal judge has ordered an East Texas company to pay black workers more than $3 million in back pay as damages in a class action lawsuit charging racial discrimination. U.S. District Judge Ron Clark said Lufkin Industries Inc. must pay the workers $3.1 million as well as 5 percent interest. The company sells and services oil field pumping units, foundry castings and power transmission products.

New Tax Exemption For Disabled Veterans

According to Hopkins County Veterans Service Officer Captain Joe Reid Scott, all veterans who receive 100 percent disability compensation from the VA due to a service connected disability and a rating of 100 percent disabled or of individual unemployability is entitled to an exemption from taxation of the total appraised value of the veteran’s residence homestead. The bill was signed by Governor Rick Perry and is now law.
